Start with the package you actually have

Keep the full product name, flavor, net weight, UPC if present, lot code and date marking. A recall notice can cover particular lots, sizes or production dates rather than every item bearing a brand. A store SKU helps find an offer but is not necessarily the manufacturer’s batch identifier. Do not substitute one for the other in a recall check.

Use the official record and maker notice

FDA’s animal-veterinary recall and withdrawal page is a starting point, alongside the manufacturer’s current notices. Read the affected product description and lot/date scope in the actual announcement. A search engine’s absence of a match is not an all-clear certificate. This site has not certified the recall status of an individual received bag or its entire production history.

Compare every condition in the notice

If a notice names one flavor and one size, compare both before deciding whether your item matches. A current retail page can still exist while a notice concerns a past batch; conversely, a similar product name does not prove your bag is unaffected. If a code is illegible or the notice is ambiguous, ask the maker with the information you can read and preserve the package.

Keep the action separate from shopping math

A stock or price result is not a safety result. If a product may be implicated, do not count it as usable matching inventory simply because the tool accepts a number. Follow the actual notice and qualified advice. The local tools do not issue disposal, reimbursement or replacement instructions, and they cannot determine whether a pet’s symptoms were caused by a product.

Save an evidence trail for reorders

Record when you checked, which official notice you read and the product/lot relationship you established or could not establish. A new delivery needs its own batch check; an earlier result cannot clear future lots. If the issue is a health concern, FDA guidance directs owners to stop the product and contact a veterinarian, with reporting to the maker and FDA as appropriate.

A missing code is an unresolved relationship

If a recall notice requires a lot range but the package code cannot be read, a matching brand and weight do not resolve the question. Keep the bag and ask the manufacturer how to identify the lot. Do not substitute the retailer’s SKU, which identifies an offer rather than a production batch. Likewise, an old saved recall search cannot clear the next delivery. The evidence trail should state both the checked notice and any remaining inability to match the physical package.
